Things have been rather hectic over the couple decades. Back in 2045, the Belarusian government was overthrown by an Artificial Intelligence organization, who is now referred to as the Artificial Intellect of Belarus (A.I.B.). For the next 40 years, they’ve developed more rapidly than anyone could ever imagine possible, both economically and militarily. Nobody in the New United Nations is able to figure out how this is possible. In early 2085, A.I.B. had desires to use their power to try and spread their influence all across the globe, so they declared war on its weakest neighbors, being Latvia, Estonia, and Lithuania. Unfortunately, since they’re in NUN, we also had to declare war on the A.I.B. even though no one in the entire alliance was ready. They were able to take full advantage of this miscue, and took major cities with ease, including Berlin, Budapest, Warsaw, Moscow, Kyiv, and Amsterdam. If we are going to prevent the world from becoming an Artificial infested slave-fest, a couple of representatives, along with myself, are going to have to make changes, taking major risks. My name is Representative Herbert, Speaker of the United States House and the holder of Oregon’s 4th seat. With the president and VP being unable to communicate in such activities, as they bear a great burden within the country, it has become my responsibility to deal with all things NUN for the country.”UN Geneva Flags” by lilivanili is licensed under CC BY 2.0. I spend most of my time in the NUN headquarters, located in Brussels, Belgium. Here is where I, along with many other NUN representatives, try to think of ideas that will be of best interest to the alliance. As the A.I.B. has ruled complete dominance over many of our allies thus far, we have officially decided to strictly set our sights on eliminating them so that they will no longer challenge our goal of world peace. We have been trying to come up with ideas for a while now, but nothing’s quite come to mind, and we have to kick our research into overdrive now that A.I.B. forces are only 350 miles from Paris and 150 miles from Brussels. King Aaron XIV of the UK suggested that we do direct research on AI and see what they can and cannot do, and try to see if there’s any traits we could exploit and gain an advantage with. I was onboard with this idea, and Minister Polo of France, President Chi of China, and King Sin of Japan also agreed to contribute to our research.
The main question we were all wondering, and I started off by asking, was “What are we even looking for in this research?” King Aaron XIV cleverly responded by stating “We shall try and highlight the weaknesses of Artificial Intelligence, and once we do this, we will discover ways to utilize these weaknesses and push these demonic A.I.B. forces all the way back to Minsk.” After a mere 4 days of intense research, we were able to gain some ground breaking intel on AI. Minister Polo highlighted AI’s lack of ability to interpret common sense. He then suggested that we don’t put too much energy into fighting them directly, but instead let them make unprovoked mistakes, and take advantage of them when the time comes. Rightfully so, King Sin claimed, “well what if they don’t end up making these mistakes?” to which Polo responded, “Fear not King Sin, they’re AI, they never change their tendencies, and my research has proven these guys are prone to mistakes.” A couple of days later, I also made a great discovery that I feel couldn’t go unnoticed. I had found out that AI was unable to adapt to change quickly, and proposed the idea of throwing constantly different frontlines and militaristic strategies at them, which I believe would cause the A.I.B. to be unable to respond fast enough for us to make our moves. Once both ideas reached King Aaron XIV, he reviewed the strategies and announced that there would be a NUN conference meeting the very next day regarding the new strategies. I was very excited to see that there was a potential solution and that there was still hope for humanity to be saved from the grip of artificial intelligence, but only the upcoming battles will be able to truly say how successful these plans are.
July 14, 2085, 8:45 AM, CET (Central European Time), commencement of the 107th NUN meeting, which would be discussing 2 new strategies that may be effective in taking down the A.I.B. Both my strategy and Minister Polos were discussed in this meeting, and the feedback was surprisingly positive! “Damn it, why didn’t we think of this before Germany and Russia fell!” from Brazil’s President, “Thinking about it this might work out very well!” from Norway’s prime minister, and “This seems like risky business, but it’s a risk I know I’m willing to take” from Saudi Arabia’s prime minister were just a few of the remarkable things the world leaders had to say about our plans. With a unanimous vote allowing our battle plans to be tested, King Aaron XIV deemed that a week from this meeting, we would head to Leuven (15 miles east of Brussels), to face the A.I.B. and test these new plans on the battlefield.
July 21, 2085, 5:21 AM, CET, in Leuven, Belgium. We noticed hundreds of thousands of A.I.B. forces steamrolling toward the city, and we now realized this would probably be our only chance to stop A.I.B, because if they captured Leuven, they would have a clear shot at capturing Brussels, and we would be unable to cooperate as an alliance properly without the headquarters to unite us all. The first major strategy change involved how we were going to attack their forces. Normally, we would just try to face them head-on, and as you might know, since we’ve been pushed back all the way into Belgium, this worked out poorly. Instead, we established 2 different fronts, one on the left-hand side of the A.I.B. forces, and another on the right, leaving the middle open. We decided to leave 30% of our military back in the city in case the A.I.B. tried to directly rush, which is pretty much all they’ve proven to know how to do at this point. Luckily, the A.I.B. forces weren’t ready for such an indirect attack, so many of them were either blindsided or unable to react in time to our fronts striking them! Due to their lack of preparation for our adjustment, their casualty count was already 15x higher than in any other battle this entire war! The commander, getting sick of his troops dropping like flies, noticed the opening in the middle of the front, and ordered the forces to surge the center and attempt to capture the city, which is exactly what we wanted them to do! Their entire army rushed Leuven, and everyone who stayed back was hiding, quickly taking out many of the rushers. The best thing about all of this is that the A.I.B. left their front completely unprotected while rushing Leuven, so we were able to take advantage of this by surging our troops into the gaps, and surrounded the A.I.B. forces, stranding them right outside Leuven, and eliminating every single one of them. Not only did we save Leuven from being captured, but we also took out 890,000 A.I.B. troops (20% of their military!), discovered major ways to win battles, and now know how to continue defeating the A.I.B. all the way back into Minsk. The battle of Leuven turned out to be the biggest victory in all of human history!
This strategy continued to do wonders for the alliance, as we were quickly able to liberate major cities such as Amsterdam, Berlin, Copenhagen, Moscow, Warsaw, Bucharest, and many others. October 12, 2085, just under 3 months after our heroic victory in Leuven, we had finally pushed the A.I.B. back on all fronts to the point where we could see Minsk in the distance, and none of this would have been possible if the NUN hadn’t come together to prioritize this crisis and King Aaron XIV hadn’t set up that research team pointing out AI’s flaws back in July. Today was the day we’d finally be freed from the 4 decades of hell living in fear of being suppressed by artificial intelligence. As all the NUN soldiers approached Minsk, completely surrounding the city, King Stockson of Sweden looks at me and sincerely says “Thank you Rep. Herbert, for everything, it’s really a blessing to finally live in peace after 40 years.” King Patrick of Finland added “If it weren’t for you and the 4 others, I don’t think we’d have a chance in hell of surviving, but here we are, ready to take Minsk out.” King Aaron XIV turned to me and said “This one’s all you, whenever you want the men to go, give ‘em the command to take Minsk back.” I then turned to the vast NUN army, which surrounded Minsk entirely, and excitedly said “Are you guys ready to get our lives back? Let’s go and take it!” The army quickly rushed into Minsk, and with the significant numbers advantage, we were able to quickly capture it, and at 5:43 PM, CET, the A.I.B. finally surrendered to our terms. The treaty was going to be signed in Paris. “The 33rd Treaty of Paris states that the A.I.B. will be exterminated and never to be brought back, and its land will become a strictly NUN monitored zone, illegal for anyone unauthorized to enter for 30 years. All signs of artificial intelligence must be destroyed and criminalized, and any man caught supporting and/or utilizing it from here on out will be arrested and punished by death. No member of the NUN may declare war for 50 years, and every member must contribute to helping the betterment of every nation at all times.” Admittedly, things are going to be a bit different around here, but one thing I’ve learned is that as long as you have the right people supporting you, and you have the ability to make change when necessary, there isn’t an obstacle you can’t overcome.
Toews, Rob. What Artificial Intelligence still can’t do, Online Article, 2021.
As the AI nation was super powerful and had the capability to do nearly everything humans can do and then some, the NUN needed to find a way to defeat them, and they had to exploit the weaknesses of AI in order to do this. One thing AI cannot do quite yet is quickly adapt to change. The NUN will use this to their advantage as they will constantly change their approach in the war, as the AI nation might not be able to adapt to the changes quickly enough. Sometimes, AI lacks the ability to use common sense. The NUN won’t have to do anything directly about this, but the AI nation will make some poor decisions (that only people without common sense would make) causing them to weaken themselves and their chances.
BBC News. What is the United Nations and What does it do?, Online Article, 2023.
I’m modeling my main character, the NUN (New United Nations), after the United Nations that is well known across the world. The United Nations is a global organization that aims to unite all nations across the world, hoping to maintain peace, security, and global progress, while keeping every country in the world involved in getting the world to become a better place. One thing the UN does not do, that the NUN will do in this story, will be fighting in the war against the AI nation, which will be necessary for the NUN to keep to all their other values. The other major aspect of the NUN in this story is their intention of keeping humanity better off, which in the story, they are attempting to save humanity from being eternal servants to artificial superiors.
The Setting will greatly change throughout the story, but the most significant location will be the NUN headquarters (Formerly NATO Headquarters) in Brussels, Belgium.
North American Treaty Organization. NATO Headquarters, Online Article, 2023.
Many important aspects of my story will take place inside the former NATO headquarters, which in this alternate timeline got renovated into the NUN headquarters, residing in Brussels, Belgium’s capital. This seemed like an appropriate place to make the main setting, as the NUN will use this area to allow all the countries to meet up and discuss alliance strategies (similar to how NATO used to). While the NATO headquarters was already huge, since the NUN is much bigger, I want to emphasize that the NUN headquarters is much bigger and much more renovated than it ever was even close to being under NATO. Thousands of workers, along with many politicians and leaders work and spend great amounts of their time here, and it becomes much easier for all the members of the NUN to communicate with each other and plan for the future, which will be essential for dealing with the AI nation throughout the story. Things will get a little unpleasant in Brussels however when the AI nation makes advancements all the way to the outskirts of Brussels, getting as close as Luxembourg.
